A perspective on the fragility of glass-forming liquids

چکیده
We discuss possible extraneous effects entering in the conventional measures of “fragility” at atmospheric pressure that may obscure a characterization genuine super-Arrhenius slowdown relaxation. first consider role density, which increases with decreasing temperature constant pressure, and then potential influence high-temperature dynamical behavior associated activation energy scale. These two involve thermodynamic parameters strength “bare” reflecting specific bonding between neighboring molecules. They vary from system to with, most likely, little connection any putative collective glass formation. show how scale these out by refining definition fragility modifying celebrated Angell plot. dedicate this note our great so inspiring friend, Austen Angell, associate tribute another dear colleague who died too soon, Daniel Kivelson.

On the Fragility of Bulk Metallic Glass Forming Liquids
In contrast to pure metals and most non-glass forming alloys, metallic glass-formers are moderately strong liquids in terms of fragility. The notion of fragility of an undercooling liquid reflects the sensitivity of the viscosity of the liquid to temperature changes and describes the degree of departure of the liquid kinetics from the Arrhenius equation. In general, the fragility of metallic gl...
متن کاملFragility and thermodynamics in nonpolymeric glass-forming liquids.
For nonpolymeric supercooled liquids, the empirical correlation m = 56Tg DeltaCp(Tg)/DeltaHm provides a reliable means of correlating dynamic and thermodynamic variables. The dynamics are characterized by the fragility or steepness index m and the glass transition temperature Tg, while thermodynamics enter in terms of the heat capacity step DeltaCp at Tg and the melting enthalpy DeltaHm. The co...
متن کاملPhase-separation perspective on dynamic heterogeneities in glass-forming liquids.
We study dynamic heterogeneities in a model glass former whose overlap with a reference configuration is constrained to a fixed value. We find that the system phase separates into regions of small and large overlap, indicating that a nonzero surface tension plays an important role in the formation of dynamical heterogeneities. We calculate an appropriate thermodynamic potential and find evidenc...
متن کاملViscosity of glass-forming liquids.
The low-temperature dynamics of ultraviscous liquids hold the key to understanding the nature of glass transition and relaxation phenomena, including the potential existence of an ideal thermodynamic glass transition. Unfortunately, existing viscosity models, such as the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) and Avramov-Milchev (AM) equations, exhibit systematic error when extrapolating to low temperatur...

In supercooled liquids structural relaxation shows up as a frequency dependence of mechanical and thermal properties such as the adiabatic bulk modulus, Ks, shear modulus, G, expansion coecient, ap, and isobaric speci®c heat, cp. Whereas Ks and G can be measured directly, we claim this is dicult for cp. Near the glass transition where cp diers signi®cantly from the isochoric speci®c heat, cv...
